Just came across some words that provoked me to write this blog ;) Rather i was kinda getting bored here... before i begin my ramblings... may i...
Of late, I have this habit of pasting every other word in Word Web n checking out its meanings n finding more complicated replacements for them, just in case I wanna fool my reader ;) Was trying out the same trick, and came across these…
We often read the word “solicit” on wedding cards… I was writing a wedding invite for a friend one morning, n I just tot, “lemme find a synonym for solicit”…
God! The synonyms were shocking!!! Either Word Web has lost track of good meanings or they are on a war with MS Word to give inverse meanings to words!!!
I decided, “solicit” is no word to b used on a wedding invite!!! If I have been using it as a synonym for “request”, I’ll stick to the word “request”!!! (I can’t even paste the synonyms here!)
On a brighter side, I came across a nice new word… je ne sais quoi – okay… a little too tough to pronounce… but a sophisticated replacement for the word “sophisticate”!!! (I need to ask my friend if it’s a French word, is yes, how am I to pronounce it? Its like a tongue twister!!!)
Again, the meanings for this phrase in Word Web n MS Word were contradicting!!!
I moved to another word “subtle”, something tat I use commonly… okay… I was in for some surprise… I always tot ke subtle meant delicate, slight… Word Web says subtle means pernicious – evil!!!!!!
Hmm… playing with English is a little too difficult now… wat with so many contradicting meanings to one word!!! It sure is so much better to use my simple school English ;) At least; no one will find another meaning to my words!!!
All this reminded me of our school-days ka “double meaning” jokes… yeah… I didn’t knw that words actually had double meanings… one good n another evil!!!
Btw, a cute replacement for the word “okay” - hunky-dory!!!
Thats all for now :)
